The Proud Matriarch

This 94 year old Vietnamese woman has endured tremendous loss and hardship yet forges on as the proud matriarch of her family. After losing her husband in the war, she was left to raise her daughters and granddaughter alone. They spend their days weaving reed mats to sell at the market for 2 dollars each. I shot this image, quietly, from an open door. I was moved by her somber expression and the way her hand clutched the wall. The walls telling her story, worn and marked by years of holding on.

A Woman's Eyes

There is something very powerful about looking into a woman's eyes, especially when she is in front of my camera lens. No words are necessary. In just moments of being together we had a connection. We are women. She was happy that I cared enough to photograph her and I was thrilled to be able to capture this image and be able to relive that moment forever.
